Edmonton's Twin Drive-In

It's one of those memories that I am sorry that my children will never experience. The 'Drive-In Movie'. When I first moved to Edmonton, one of the things on my list to see and do was to go to the one remaining drive-in theatre known as the 'Twin', which I am glad I did before it closed. This theatre was located on the north side of Edmonton just off of 137th avenue and down the road from Leon's Furniture.

It had been shut down for a few years before this photo was taken by another person on the web. About 5 years ago, I witnessed the bulldozers and excavators pulling down the screens which were all that was left of the property. Apparently looters and vandals had gotten to the building in the off-season and destroyed the projection rooms and cafeteria. I'm not sure who owned the theatre at the time, but they had understandably decided against reopening after all of the damage had been done. Not to mention that only a few short years later a new multiplex was built and opened across the way from it.

I had a chance to go back to the property recently and there is absolutely no evidence that the theatre ever existed. Just a big mess of overgrowth and trees (with some illegal dumping thrown in for variety) and some Quad trails.

I have a newspaper article about the day that they tore down the screens. I will post it on here when I find it again.

Why they are a thing of the past, I will never understand. Progress sucks.
