One of the funny parts of our adventure was this rental van parked at one of the Jasper landmarks. The van is from British Columbia and is rented by a company called wickedcampers.com.

I suspect the rates are very reasonable seeing as you are driving a crazy looking van with some pretty crazy graphics on it. It's also not a new van by any means but I was of course, entertained by the Ghostbusters reference on the side.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-67929386792916010682011-01-07T12:43:00.002-07:002011-07-25T19:39:35.668-06:00The Purple Ambulance is Gone!I wrote a while back about a purple 'Write the Nation' ambulance that had been parked for years on 156 street in the West end of Edmonton. I actually drove by there the other day and noticed that it was gone. I have no idea if the owner sold it or sent it to the junkyard. Either way, it's outta there.

UPDATE (07/25/11): The van is back. It was only moved to accommodate road construction.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-25277402575257100842010-11-08T16:36:00.010-07:002010-11-08T16:50:47.151-07:00A Visit to Heritage ParkI recently did a nice little blurb about 'Fort Edmonton Park, located in Edmonton and shared a few recent pictures from a very impressed tourist-and-his-family point of view. Recently, we took a trip to Heritage Park in Calgary, which is of the same concept and truly enjoyed our visit there as well. I thought I would share a few pictures of that park also.

If you've never been to Heritage Park, make it a place to visit. There is shopping, old trains, vintage carnival rides, an old steamboat ride and lots of historical buildings to see.

P.S.: I didn't watermark these photos so feel free to use them as backgrounds or whatever.

<img style="cursor:pointer; Anyone who lives in Edmonton is probably fully aware of Fort Edmonton Park nestled down in the river valley. But, for those of you who may not have known that it exists or haven't lived in Edmonton in a long time, I figured I would post a few photos I took this past weekend when the city hosted a 'Free' day for most of it's attractions.

One thing I have to say? Thank you Edmonton for giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy your cool attractions without always making a family break the bank to afford it.

Enjoy the photos.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuOhTlfjZO3Mq3lJn_nwzYzR7_u4zeiqODxPd-AGAifN9uHnQJ2O1i8XsnWdrP3XmfVnRJN7zViYFuT2R6fZAxl1tPD_bS3f3y278I_0DDhD9oWUKz1sD6hhXiqKiYkT9QdMOpif7XDx0/s320/forted+015a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522102187811060850" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdWIChRe1vvsyWiqNLIJ3EUdkWreQCiJp5uTKgrucUJgU9erdydcjl9mLscL-6qaFH7HCEwxZPiwNLa7IX9BYwBZXVYGBjWZ9fLB2W9dLYReygwzUEy1CkDMLrFzbIsMLPpcJlG60-7d8/s320/forted+008a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522102005317766754" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghw8MdsT9JinFRoBqw9EJdEzQowbldRlTzxzUK7NOK8UCsySrnyXcnjTNT3fbGM1uLBdM4AE4OjnEWCGR-comZlAn8eudtBD3h-JxRuEw-dg_sZIXCuTC1HC44F6zZu2iNbWU_hvcBNZM/s320/forted+004a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522101823565969458" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW2bLAgiVjb4VrQmv_O76H6EduLJ3aEo-jCkiVR3eqmCmGjANdThuj6pOeP_Gk0qsCAW18qYC3X4EJASeMVPMWUlPVE7xW7csp82Ar_CIg9zpzvNnXLfsBsEkmOJFhA7_-fX43Z4v5SkY/s320/forted+005a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522101651239199074" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-7916376749784574662010-08-06T20:57:00.002-06:002010-08-06T21:08:10.340-06:00Ghostbusters on a Buick<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 164px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV-otVWYzWPVdFAr-obn-w8gDYw0qP7yU1tmihPyvKB8GaRPn27HTHCj-nm-kSiOsLvKI5YrYUDzdt6FSviu9US0L4_nBSLNkza3V87rTKuyGD1F2ah5WbQMT513KLcC9Se-7nmgtyMoY/s320/SSPX0071a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5502499371204260594" />
I am not sure why this image struck me as worthy of posting? Maybe I am getting desperate for material? Maybe.

I saw this Buick LeSabre from behind and thought about how much it resembled the ECTO-1 from Ghostbusters only that it was red. Then I realized that it was not the same model, as the ECTO-1 was a Cadillac, although both were made by the same company and were probably built around the same time.

After realizing that these were not the same model of car, I started to walk away from this one. I glanced back one more time for whatever reason and noticed that it had a 'No Ghost' logo stuck to the back window. It was as though the owner had already pondered the same thing I had just done, probably at some other point. I just appreciated the irony.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-24686340717655317692010-07-15T22:16:00.003-06:002010-07-15T22:20:20.179-06:00Good Gulf Gas Pump<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4zMVaIAjrZvGotVfzoP-0sTGeK30a4_Zv4FLHIHJ6vAMcyE-onk4BuZWd_1EhzqsF2u4sf60VpKTha02Vqn7EobtZ_8Yet8dlat7II5G8y9nFd4W6YIDvZTPMAp1e15XYbJVkug17mEs/s320/Picture+003a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494353911518565314" />
This is a short post today. I have passed this van for the past few years and always mentally noted that I would eventually go home and look to see if there was still information about it. Well, to my surprise, the website is still up and running although it hasn't been updated in some time. All the info you need can be found on the author's website at this link:

http://www.writethenation.com/about.shtml

It's a shame, in my opinion, that the van is forced to sit on the side of the road and succumb to the elements. When I did a little digging into the owner of the van and more about the tour, you are eventually taken to a website where he offers to sell the van for next to nothing to anyone who wants to buy it. I'm not sure if the person who took it over is now the one with the van sitting out front or if nobody offered to take it for a decent price and it was kinda left behind. You can find this information at:

http://www.pinkambulance.com/

Maybe it's still for sale, maybe it isn't.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 264px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht03lDfUvKEiR5P0a88Y7EgRxKgFcEqFEeP3-NJqij5t-b4lfisCijDoDDJDNywjRcfAsiMym91oMZfvHJ9Myej2X8xjsx9EivLudXjYo5bpzUi-w_tZ8dQitbW9F5HMKqBIyjy6mIibs/s320/SSPX0070a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492141186054455346" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-21114367961435530962010-07-01T23:25:00.004-06:002010-07-03T09:33:18.229-06:00MacTaggart Sanctuary<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEeERZckhlJpeH2l68WdEaV7S6mEFgluVa4aUf_bFhh1MkRxgvT2Vma9YmByE0oiK4kZsAZ35lkfw05GlBKYbDfwRfmi-ooONhWnMAOOeF0AoyYLYzsJ0r_MjPFgZc_qOw72nGdJjZgyc/s320/SSPX0052.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5489176330689911410" />

While working in the new MacTaggart subdivision near the Whitemud creek area, I came across an old sign posted on a fence. I believe this could've been the western side of the boundary that protects an area known as the MacTaggart Sanctuary.

Here is some information I gathered from a Google search:

The 257-acre Mactaggart Sanctuary in Whitemud Creek Ravine was donated by Sandy A. Mactaggart and the Province of Alberta to the University of Alberta and the City of Edmonton as a nature preserve in the 1980s. Ample evidence of beaver and gopher activity on the short, level path along the stream's edge (fun even for toddlers!) and the steeper, more challenging walk through the forest. Many local residents walk their dogs through this area.

I was actually unaware of this little gem hidden in south-side of the city. To locate it, here is the address:

Parking is available in a small lot on the south side of 23rd Avenue at Smith's Crossing; walk across the blue bridge to enter the Sanctuary.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-14875345773830270662010-06-26T13:05:00.000-06:002010-06-26T13:08:01.923-06:00Google Blogger Updates Templates!I may be a little late in the game at this point, I'm sure, but Google Blogger who currently hosts Alberta Found has updated it's templates. So, I made a few positive changes to Alberta Found and hope everyone likes the new look. I can also see that it's obvious I need to update my title photo as well because it doesn't fit on the page anymore.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-50071801985981583902010-06-08T08:31:00.004-06:002010-06-08T08:59:01.257-06:00Reclaimation SiteDuring the past winter, I was doing some work in the Hermitage area on the North side of the Yellowhead. When you are driving the Yellowhead along this stretch, the view of this area is actually blocked by the railway tracks because the tracks sit on a berm above the elevation of the highway.

On the North side of the tracks however, there is a small neigbourhood that dead-ends at a large fence that surrounds an even larger piece of empty land. Having worked along the fence line, I came across a sign hanging on the fence that stated the land was in some kind of a remedial program and that it should not be trespassed upon in order for the testing to be completed accurately. The land apparently belongs to a company called Domtar and I am assuming it is related to the paper manufacturing company. The sign on the fence looked like it had been there for a long time.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS5u7_Lyt5NpD5AAYOZ1y5EIMcVRAM5qnH9t3nfT78iMcciXt7SqJS-j-59Xu6DCDaRRDKa3C8uuL28aJc7SyNPBF5_UCg3lUWGXPbP_5B_YLDLqfmyDUghai9fK9vZLoNhFHc9rkOrdk/s320/Picture+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5480414567403135170" />

On my side of the property and still behind the fence, there were a couple of large wooden poles holding up a platform full of electrical transformers. There were also some very old outdoor light fixtures attached to those poles. No wiring was leading off the poles into the site but wiring was leading to them from a public line on the outside of the fence. It is a fairly large chunk of land and it sits right in the middle of urban sprawl. I would only take a guess that this land had held industry or a manufacturing plant on it at some point in the past and now sits vacant and somewhat contaminated. I searched for info about the property briefly but couldn't find anything significant about it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 269px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_A55DULNjOgbvATmCDfctAlFcDQ-KVB1eaqLmkr1ll6LglMbQpypv2PX6lztDVLWOERAGMyZ1QTO4igYL3PN66_U_wsGCyiTMN-Mp-9IbNi-kL1xsi9uiShZtRU43roSSf24rq8KmvwE/s320/domtarsite.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5480414892499693794" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-33180640646980323302010-06-07T17:23:00.002-06:002010-06-07T17:38:56.863-06:00On a Search to Find MyselfI apologize that I haven't posted any new locations in a little while. I found myself a victim of the downsizing economy by getting laid-off from my recent employer. And unfortunately, the perks of my job involved all the sightseeing that I post on this blog site on a regular basis. So, in the last couple of weeks I have been playing a little catch-up with my personal life. This bit of free time gives me a chance to see this whole situation, not as a negative one, but as a chance to start over and to reorganize my priorities, professionally and personally.

Does this mean the end of 'Alberta Found'?

Well, not if I can help it. As a matter of fact, I am looking at how this will improve the blog site. I truly enjoy the thrill and adventure of exploring Alberta's past and in some cases, it's future. I may have to work a little harder to find new material, but in the scheme of it all, will make it more fun and challenging for myself as a reporter, as it will be for you, the reader.

So, bear with me for a short while if the posts are a bit more far and between. I still have some interesting topics stored away to fill in the gaps and such. So, all should be good for now.

Please continue to enjoy my blog,

RobAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-14953228963288766412010-05-17T18:44:00.009-06:002010-05-17T19:10:14.054-06:00Abandoned Houses on 180 streetI just recently stumbled across another isolated location, by fluke, in the west end of Edmonton where a small neighbourhood probably once thrived but is now being phased out by industry.

On 180 street just north of Stony Plain Road, a little past a Finning branch, sits a group of 3 houses that are currently still occupied by residents.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiahwHyIjwA5BxMxRm6p62ZA6LLSO8t_Xzo9Am-XcRMHawejFFSg_Ng02BbofmQvAm7vr8rbQKvSLZiiL5wlEYVJUgiRatw7N_EWW6d7jL8bSZnGy5Nvcnu29-tykyigVaxhgEHJTMXAQY/s320/SSPX0030a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472407009880788082" />

Further down the road, you will also find two very derelict houses that have obviously not been occupied in many years. There were signs everywhere warning of dogs on the premises so I took that as a 'No Trespassing' sign and stayed off the actual properties. On the far north side of the last property, there is an access road that leads up the side of the property to an industrial site. I walked up that road briefly to get a shot or two of the backs of the houses but left as soon as I could.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPfrMFjLOVxTCj8_Y_NM8LEYwyf1LOJTduqvukJHiODNlqbTBlYfMltPjUxh2XdYw0mugdYlrHwnuUYan0stqFBQpUTrVcZTWBiA4JVsWLtPdkwEiGV9mx8vN79ykbXUNvcip7y7d9IIs/s320/SSPX0031a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472408213951551298" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0h5G4hnVi27d7nnXZVF6o4PMKwkEGImV6Si0i67N6y0xed0IWNIoH_s8z3GUuqJWJqAZB5ZTiEvgp8OfhNb6UD35olM8D0IThhnU9mjDHoSH6DJIErkStIdx1djj_tg4qP1xxxQfCZWU/s320/SSPX0033a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472408454187463026" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrbNUCwt-lTkDnTPs4oPieeX43vbSez9ht86S8uI99ZSmAcvYgRZjwY0DP80DdATfPAiKRRMcvtIWi_aTz64bEkvz9l9EtbV0nx14575_0DYmI8Dhlj4SXQDr2IHf44LUcJ1nQuBf1pzQ/s320/SSPX0034a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472408686809889794" />

I also captured a shot from Google Earth to show you what things look like from above.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 296px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-KaLf5H_Q_iJbJKXKRNkCxAyDI2ULzjYivhJMR1Gp-o5RpQ1tHeuzRiGZmUdn7w-zBM9GR3VIyHwhlrl-NlQJ2W6q2tewIypzeC5Y85HMpcYzhNa40PeD9gqXwmdy1H_v1070v7BWUoM/s320/aerialview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472408974817006754" />

I always find it interesting how old relics like this can remain hidden and unharmed to follow through on their natural decay process. You would normally think that these places would be a gathering place for trouble or a haven for vandals. Yet, in Edmonton, people tend to leave things like this alone. Many are just more content to smash bus shelters and break public property in high traffic areas instead, things that people are ACTUALLY STILL USING. For the past couple of years, I would see maybe two on average in any given week no matter what area of the city I was in. I have even had one that had hung around my yard for most of the winter. A couple of times, I found him taking refuge under my office window (my office is in the basement). But this season, I have counted about seven of these rabbits running around, just in my neighbourhood at almost any given time. I've noticed an explosion of them in many other areas as well.

And with that, all of these rabbits have brought with them another menace, especially in residential neighbourhoods.

Coyotes!

I was working in the subdivision of Greisbach a few weeks ago and actually had a coyote approach me as if it were just someone's pet. At first, I was a little confused and thought that maybe I was mistaking someone's pet for a wild dog. When I realized I was wrong, I made sure to keep my distance from him. This didn't deter him from wandering around the subdivision freaking out parents who were taking their little ones for walks in the parks and such. This coyote had absolutely no fear of anyone. A few residents in the area took to chasing him away with brooms or any other type of garden implement they could grab quickly. Eventually though, Fish and Wildlife showed up and that was the last we saw of him.

I suspect that this event will only be the beginning of a bigger problem this season. If you are out and about in any of this city's amazing parks, keep an extra vigilant eye out for predators who have been drawn to the city in search of rabbits.

Here is a little information about the Jack Rabbits: White-tailed jackrabbits or prairie hares are found throughout the prairies, parkland and cultivated regions of Alberta. Jackrabbits prefer an open habitat because they depend on their running speed for protection from enemies.

Adults may weigh as much as 3.5 kg each. Only getting as close as I am allowed to be without stepping on to railway property, I snapped a picture or two of this equipment so I could do a little more research.

Basically, this is a 'Wheel Impact Load Detector' system that records freight cars by serial number and is able to analyze it's wheels as it passes by. This is a new kind of system that will look for defects in the wheels that could cause damage to the tracks or a future derailment. The system is in place to 'tag' the offending freight cars and catalogue this data so mechanics can get to the problem immediately. I'm not sure if anyone else agrees with me, but I think that this is pretty cool.

The setup seemed very clunky with all of it's big cameras and sensors located all over a large area, but hey, if it works, then who cares. If you feel the need to check this out for yourself, just remember to stay away from the equipment as it is expensive and sensitive, not to mention private property.

Always remember that railway property is private property. The railway is fully within it's rights to arrest you if you are caught trespassing on the tracks without prior consent from the railway in question. Besides, in my opinion it is downright stupid to play on any tracks at any time, regardless.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDw4L1Rrbqi9mR63RIXe94AjoQVoXq5_4INSdOByhBd7kxAxpnSn-ivZiUMu5WlrduSkspwOPDoNFCHzxmqoIHQUWgnlCWTCIMVPzP01JZATTt66ibqFVJ9a6CUCevuphoGWlQpqzwaaM/s320/Picture+006a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459427340073277794" />

I retrieved this snippet from a company website that specializes in this technology:

Wheel Impact Load Detector (WILD) is the most widely used system in the world today to manage the wheel impact load spectrum for the targeted removal of defective wheels from service. The first major step towards truly performance-based wheel management, the WILD continually monitors locomotive and rail car wheel health to ensure safe train operations. With proven accuracy and reliability, WILDs scan millions of wheels per day throughout the international rail industry.

The WILD is a strategic device for the protection of rail infrastructure. Although wheels with extremely high impacts are rare on a percentage basis, small percentages do not equate to small effects. High impacting wheels can dissipate on the order of twenty-five horsepower each, degrading track, ballast and bridge structures while reducing bearing and other vehicle component lives. Over time, the repetitive load cycle of these wheels causes rail fractures. It is not uncommon for system users to see three or four of potentially rail breaking wheels per day across their WILD networks.

Wheel defects with spalling, shelling, slid flat, or out-of-round characteristics impart excessive impact loads. Caught early, they can be trued. Undetected, these wheels can damage thousands of miles of track or cause derailments. Proactive railroads use networks of WILDs to control broken wheels, burnt-off journals, hot boxes, and brake rigging damage by removing high impact wheels, reducing derailments as a result. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-90892786584983727882010-04-10T09:33:00.004-06:002010-04-10T09:51:25.433-06:00Historic School Site<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 269px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPox_T54QgfzgEDDwWhMhhWXJ6cbFKeYiBPLbVl0BpRiWo2T3CBj84svyEQZW1BqHqMl39bo9XNTg2Ea55t5ksRU9OYbGXQzN4dyuvdB5YzmtsOan7cLp75irNuX8b6B2JrvoCYiFhJ9M/s320/cunnschl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458535813849405314" />
Just north-west of St. Albert in the county area, I came across a private residence that had a small sign at the front of the lot stating that it was an historical site. The sign reads that it was the original location of 'Cunningham School' and that it's service date was 1895 to 1945.

There is no longer a school on the site, just someone's home. I did a search on the internet and couldn't find ANY information whatsoever as to the reason this site is designated as historic. Regardless, I thought that this was interesting enough to post on Alberta Found. Maybe I can spark some information from anyone who may know more about it. I could have gone to the door and asked the owners myself, but sometimes my job does not allow me the time to do those things. Besides, I still respect the privacy of any landowner and feel a surprise visit such as that would be disrespectful.

The property is located at Range Road 263a and Township Road 540 if you want to see it for yourself. Please remember that this is not a public landmark and that any access to the land is considered trespassing without the permission of the owner.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCNYmRKBog_xm96vtEmJE7siW8jeBWPtQS1zyHGVveRUdDxgCgX1BrujnNvovPydjYRgEO0bGBaytHbVNBvszOM9mAmucYn6s1rss5VVyXd9MNYkQ1zFpyPw4liHZBbWyPpr8boGlNw90/s320/Picture+012a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458535712124304610" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-25866906893174089272010-03-25T09:22:00.005-06:002010-03-25T09:30:58.549-06:00Old Grain Silo in Spruce Grove<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwkMEbV7OJE_wMw0aMP6Pa8HHg_nduJfaznbzXVmoHDE3S9pfioVZl1E5UiV6njUQJSsXdeTTp__vvwQRcpGDeQ8LeMDKtKAZcRS88ZXevk8QmdgRDDifpTDzcaCzvP3IxWqUURv0dduA/s320/101_0979.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452593953044213986" />

One of the farthest new subdivisions being developed in Spruce Grove (towards the west) has had an interesting little artifact sitting in the middle of the future development area since they started to develop it a few years ago. It's an old wooden grain silo of some sort that's definitely seen better days.

I'm not sure if it has always sat exactly where it is now or if it had been moved there during the land transformation plans. Either way, I found it entertaining that it has been allowed to stand for the duration of the land development and that vandals and arsonists haven't even touched it. I really had no idea what I was looking at so I decided to focus on it specifically. This is located next to (and left) of an older building currently being used as a Liquidation Store. From the road, it's hidden in the trees and even mostly obscured by dirt piles on most sides. It is also fenced off (although not very well) to keep trouble out although, based on graffiti and one building appearing to be burnt out, not really working.

I went home that night and looked it up on Google Earth. The monument from the air is even odder from that view than it was on the ground. However, upon closer inspection, I came to realize that this was quite possibly an old shooting range basing my conclusion on the divot marks along the main back wall.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkau4rfNsuaFugGO_tZMmrnT9k4AJz9yND-ThFNLQ6mfHc5Bcr1DeGs0BWCdE72kiJ3oTPuOF8bwS6iYXrOf4o7srOKM3CRcVe2TzEJ3QlJpoYYxIThXc6efHTkRusOtPtLp4ct-nrI8Q/s320/101_0985a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447216644584036898" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 269px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvuEGrWBIv0JLXoOgOB7gGCvjAHQbyas5nbo18_aDObjm-o_wNOcv0CpLAt1ccctfzBOcpvNX7_fGbuRhKn2NgbMEFUh2KJ8Cuh2v0sn6ZiNCF88I5GdmX-Fv6Nu9QXHJ5C0pGS7XNYno/s320/griesbach.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447219599983078930" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-86594034748944142602010-03-03T20:37:00.002-07:002010-03-03T20:43:47.668-07:00A Strange Haul?<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdZuFRu67oc4ji6xIYPzZNPzWmA3ja9GKnEdyDRBuwcxHgAj6fjzkYcTZxibsXHNDb38Tt5y9YLS40UHNqf1RS354wSHwkIwTZQBp-7NOF6I5b15RVX3Emn89yr_-T6AHxU9FmWd734aU/s320/Picture+014.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5444619254163176994" />
On the Yellowhead Trail last fall, I came across a semi pulling a full-size flatbed trailer. The Mercedes was discovered on an empty lot directly behind a builder's fence of a new subdivision in North Edmonton. The trailer was discovered outside the city in the Strathcona area.

Enjoy.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4aMWpiiXfhCfcGS7wsR9bzvL0ICXeRO1kKVzxFJX7MHXY-ny5JuYAG-hKSoFmU-jIwewCXsLAsGObPScoJHJjZLazXAs12_3rgpFgpBXckOPpRjofxd3ysFzN3q0TCtc0SHOLiKUczU0/s320/jeep1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438680829428994626" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcYNHgcohnB-T4OOuGOph6Nq3xr6jvizowiUqX_fqsTRqIKZP7ttbWCf9qOfwfqgi-9TzJWeaRUIrNcOazDAQZa54VnBZoQ-VQaa4ShUit1uK7COVQrTPtZpe30HiWTgDcQj2Idtzms1E/s320/old+benz.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438681612627881810" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbvocS2Hw-yfVTlhL_6HEYBV8H3Qk0cxxsp3bipeNjeSodE6RcCXIb__lWcqxN4lQkgO_pNpuZ0Qb_f5WpbHjMr8Oqt2yCLC-4_jVs8ObTXelKXbIoLxJZxUws9pUC8zm_O-IsuSuCiNI/s320/old+trailer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438681835880249874" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-18122685979313388452009-12-27T09:34:00.005-07:002009-12-27T09:59:29.577-07:00So Amazing and Yet So CreepyHere are a few pictures I snapped of an old wasp's nest just east of the city last fall. This was about the size of an average pumpkin and when I first approached it, I was apprehensive because I wasn't certain that it wasn't still active. After a few minutes of waiting to see if anything emerged, which it didn't, I took my chances.

As amazing as it looked, just with very idea that insects worked together to build such an elaborate contraption, the look of it is somewhat creepy. It is as though the nest itself was still dangerous in some way. I snapped a couple of photos and hopefully the nest is visible in the shots.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9NOWbZpFdSyxXNgWplZh3-QkFJEIZzeNgvg29d59lonIz0EH50Gq6703VjEVSnIwt6sIfJxisAFuH3ne06SQnt8ABFrylexC4t6OyjUcSSuyGNnD76IKjGu_CylCwu3BBSDVf_kb_8EE/s320/Picture+052.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5419959866100886210" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzGygEL-a9djFW8OD-LhRUmI5DrCXE18JvNhIhWBwMQ4cbCGiOTNuQWxK8FZAIfRwyK4nR7Sw30CYgEmYSPBkH6oH_716-Vyi3uwvjQSNnJcm2xCTCsGMQayI5JIftyWy8rUtL1xAO_rQ/s320/Picture+051.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5419959863740370562" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHzc67eNGjbincVYjJNf4tIYLpFE2cdkVqL1_q_4npw1K7n5OExaf9Hz5WRtYJNiGP0IREL_D7W0UUE71L86De0sOFevvXmrkEBllkwVmluPi6ymfn6ynHbVOln0PeoD8QXFBe0ap5Q8Q/s320/Picture+050.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5419959855908965010" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-80934323544747454922009-12-09T21:17:00.009-07:002009-12-09T21:38:38.797-07:00Old House in Upper WindermereWow, I didn't realize that I haven't updated this blog site since the beginning of November. Well, I apologize. I have been super busy lately and unfortunately, due to the slowdowns that the construction field still seems to be facing, I haven't had much new material to post on my site.

However, that being said, I do have another old house that is bordering on being torn down at any given time. This house is located in Upper Windermere and isn't directly accessible from any direction by vehicle, However, by foot, it sits in the back yard of many new and higher class homes. I wonder how long it will be before the owners of these expensive homes complain about the eyesore sitting behind them?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisq3eIAkfdJ9gpKtBnUK_pL-T1-VCSjIhGn_FUA2jBpu4bB7N4MnQ2BtXcP272IqMiAo-NvK1eZGlo-TsOrXk0JD_uSCemo8VkCbU20qZAt0PvU3G3_vOdfWzNxgdyIhP7_r60xr_27iw/s320/101_0840.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413458369774875330" />

Here are a few shots of the old farm that I collected. I actually took much more but I will only post the relevant ones.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1FdFyo0cBV3ZSnofmRWZsoFYqbKZExpGmoY6ErLdrysSmA4VsANm-r89CLVNY8UbhVPk2wc4rLCqZsAC1V-JB1LmOwUsrTSwxXPPNyvsHgivv8gZpI82-JMhd3RKvhjGvP-OuzVOeoUI/s320/101_0846.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413458833668176978" />

I would assume that this house probably had indoor plumbing near the end of it's life which made me wonder why an outhouse was sitting near the house.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0TXIqLlxsnirBgfIEKmUefr_M8H9Z_o4-LR7_5Kr3Id70ReDT0IzEx0gb1wIbQwuktaoqKEB84NpFxXWdcuaSEGg1ZphsckX8jAoOFKoU_v-bYYRgSekTHLhNNo88htGIrFqvvMA-Klg/s320/101_0845.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413459361474469858" />

On the enclosed front porch, there were some very interesting items including a few pieces of old stereo equipment (which I am sure was long past it's operating days). I was also greeted by about 5 cats, whom insisted on following me everywhere and showing me how much they loved me. Of course, what I think was really going on was that they were being fed by someone in the area and were assuming that I was going to do the same.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFKOEvWkl9ezWsa54RzHlgnkigbi0fkX8abMnWmABceG5kd4tTeOducZ_37Tvk4fxUoms1qy_XQ2f5A_KZjBFWpJN1-3f9MdIh7spEQsiMuuTTywqd4bBNCruey9G572gjnldZWXnhbso/s320/101_0848.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413460163747090994" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbznuhdvs9Geu_JhxBhnFybWyriqoIWaNpN780ef3fUakw0fD94_UgBZfobX9jkf6tYbtP0446SvCj3Gxdn1Lj8SpvIx-UM7JIGMmgpPuLmDzKQ1Ox_9NUVW-qoD6sDeXEoXt-dncjx90/s320/101_0855.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413460486384980786" />

The house itself had a huge padlock on the door and an 'unsafe for human habitat' photocopy hanging on the window. So, for my own safety and the respect of the current landowner, I respected the property and stayed out. My understanding is that there was somebody living there up until last year. I wanted to see them actually pull down the house but unfortunately, I would not make it back there before they did it.

This old house was making way for a new 4-plex that will be taking it's place. The lot was actually this big even though the house itself may have only eaten up about an eighth of the property. I talked to an old gentleman that lived across the street who filled me in on the history of this old house. The last few years saw tenants come and go, but finally in the last year, a young man living on the street had taken refuge there. The owner of the property had found the young man living in the house and let him stay there until he was ready to tear down the house. However, there was no power or heat, just running water.

The writing on all the surfaces of the house are presumed to have been written by this young man during his stay. But, he was long gone by the time I was able to take these pictures. As of Friday, October 30th, the house had been bulldozed.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFeGACaGQZoeG04W50-MZX9vNALGh53GoODlc0K_wX9N4jcYBX3FDwl-U135W-ujjh4VfkXApXToTcwWXeIlUO_LEr4SLRz3cwSY0nfONrjRQ7Yw__nf7ORx9yt1ZQbtli37ncaUebUlc/s320/101_0830a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399699257572420114" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4yztXpvFX_WApb09BSKutK0c13l-d4mB6M0HOfvHrsVIm2eeKQLbNJ0endf5W7Kdnwyncm1QrcsffIJnxq-LPheWlePlNnU7oMF-l0G0cArLNmLqmWxx5mcsYlhGS6B0T_9ZT_q2KpTI/s320/101_0832a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399699551642100642" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2qVakvoae7dZ_Q3-7aghujFu3W6DEklLCkYlSxcIq59DAuvPaUVViTnQRARkcQNDBtUnbIG5UnW01XJ61Wek-NFxb5JL8Wvjn0UAR9HWvitMAc7RLjQBjM18KzF_H-rnv5QeKn9AVTRA/s320/101_0835a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399699820373573554" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9e4oKXh-uc6O7iynwyJdV0hvsxQJJRif7lqv3lbWBOE9cuWyFPSasyIGrwfTr7dtLBC1XuW4b7vt1oxk7IiIqoSiAcqxXMa47eQWFaAUa8kQvnQ-r0U9IV3BUPixefp4HGmkRgxUcCew/s320/101_0836a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399700081291982770" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZqifSmYtQw-f0QP8OeI95HQd8u8buPirLb2_ORoo4KovngWJOqCpziTvORfzZkXSCpvVWK4PgqNeB2Uy4foSGsY_6k0nPLuAZSiYHK7eOTeSCCMK5wa2Yx9NjK0inuuaphI_jfTeU1ZY/s320/101_0837a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399700342216207282" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3479782634530030385.post-44756601396673268792009-10-29T20:38:00.004-06:002009-10-29T20:49:08.836-06:00Hail Damage in Stony Plain<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 246px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhElUyown0PSV2_-IE1MRwloEh5gbMyoq1DzgOfunfy708mFCouS-ivZ7_c7JVuFXqp-4CFSpl33w-EBRYvkHFXj-jcC5hupxNBkXKjdwGJ_FjzOdyqBMHnZRG49iMf_YAP-68j_qRlabw/s320/Picture+007a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398218998943583122" />

I don't know if anyone noticed the siding on the houses in the Stony Plain area, especially in a subdivision known as Westerra? It may be old news to most people but it was definitely a new sight to me.

Last August, Edmonton and the surrounding areas were hit by a severe thunderstorm with wind gusts over 100 km's and hail to boot. Well, I guess hail falling at that speed would definitely do some damage. In this case, it destroyed all the cheap plastic siding on the houses of almost every unit in the subdivision. I took these pictures near the beginning of October and I noticed that there were some siding experts just starting on the repair process at random houses. In some cases, home owners had taken it upon themselves to put some sort of tape, like duct tape or otherwise, over the holes in hopes of keeping the water out. Regardless, the neighbourhood looked like a war zone.

I don't remember the media ever mentioning this on the news (but they may have). This must have been an insurance nightmare for everyone involved.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkp9m2xBi4Fz6T9OZdvbSSBYybJfIRu4prK48pPXmS6FSWMhdBxAE8uZ3-WDjyB4nicPK57yRQtOha2-vbWso-5kpBVpN_-Hhb04tWC6WzfAOX2_VKIVStrUJDQChx8Hx6TQywRuJ4feY/s320/Picture+005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398218869563501554" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 224px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo5a-mg7ptRoeReOQ9XXGtcLEtt_kxySQSEyBl0nVC0B1scpyaAvZAhgXeyAJ_VUGs0h3gAxttQGh4UDnEjdyJ18XP65Myc8P68kTmBTujd_vxDNsByN7KN5VjYFis-nzBRqzCr1hG_j4/s320/Picture+008a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398219221310531842" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0
