Klondike Valley Campground

I snapped these pictures up a few years ago of an old Edmonton owned RV Campground called the Klondike Valley Campground. This old site was located off of Calgary Trail just after Ellerslie Road if you were headed south on an old service road. The gate was unlocked that day and I took a drive inside, but to be honest, there wasn't really anything left to take pictures of other than the exterior entrance sign. I was actually looking for an old survey monument in the park that I never located.

I was doing survey work on a newer industrial complex located in front of the old campground. To the south of that complex (and on the same land as the industrial site) was an old gas station which probably made all of it's business from the campground. The newer stretch of Calgary Trail, which passes the Leduc No. 1 historic site moves too fast and is completely removed from the old area. When the campground was sold, I'm sure the gas station also closed, if it hadn't even possibly closed before the campground.

I'm unsure if there is still anything left of this site or it's original signage. Somehow, I doubt it.

I was searching for any photos of this campground and came across your pictures. I used to work here in the early 90's. Back when Ellerslie Rd. was a one lane country road and Hwy 2 was 4 lanes with a stopsign to cross at Ellerslie. This was a busy campgound in its day, many travellers staying as a stopover to and from Alaska. And of course many came to see "the mall". There is nothing left of the main gate, however there some reminets of the site numbers if you look closely through the shubs. Across the bridge and up the hill was also a number of sites, and that area is now a grassy park and bike path. I'm glad the road into the campground has been preserved and is now a beautiful bike path with huge trees on each side. Thnaks for sharing your pictures, it brings back great memories, and I will keep searching the net for more...

Hello Alison,

Thank You for the additional information about the Klondike Campground. I've only lived in Edmonton since 1995 but my family and I have become avid campers. I'm sorry I never had a chance to camp at this particular campground.

I haven't been by there in quite a while but will have to pay it a visit sometime this summer. Maybe bring our bikes.

Thank You.

I stayed there when I first came to edmonton in the mid 80s. I was actually looking to see if they were still running as I wanted to hold a reunion there. Its a shame it has closed. Perhaps I can grab a bunch of campers and camp out a night anyway haha. Lovely photo
